Journey in Art – 40 Years of Painting: Retrospective by Fan Shao Hua
March 25, 2015

China-born Singaporean artist Fan Shaohua’s retrospective exhibition at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Nafa) celebrates 40 years of his artistic journey. With 61 artworks on display, the exhibition predominantly features pieces created after he moved to Singapore in 1992. His signature works, such as the Lotus series in oil and Chinese ink, showcase his unique style that blends traditional Chinese elements with Western painting techniques.

Fan, who graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and won Singapore’s UOB Painting of the Year in 2000, highlights the multicultural influences of living in Singapore. His recent Singapore River series, large canvases depicting its transformation, and portraits of multi-racial Singaporeans capture the diversity of his surroundings.

A notable theme in his work is the late founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, whom Fan deeply admired. Since first portraying Mr. Lee in 1994, Fan has created multiple commissioned portraits, including a symbolic series using four colors representing Singapore’s racial harmony. A standout piece, A Great Man From A Small Country (2002), is a large Chinese ink painting that he intends to present to the nation. With over 15 solo exhibitions worldwide, Fan Shaohua continues to evolve and promises even more compelling art ahead.
