The 10th "Ngee Ann National Day Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition" brings together works from 64 renowned local artists and students from various institutions, using calligraphy and brushstrokes to depict the nation's landscape and memories.
Organized by the Ngee Ann Cultural Centre, the exhibition recently opened, showcasing 73 works of calligraphy and painting, including pieces in calligraphy, Chinese ink, watercolor, oil, acrylic, and seal engraving. The exhibition features works by local Cultural Medallion recipients Tan Kian Por, Ho Ho Ying, and Milenko Prvacki.
The artworks capture national memories from different perspectives. One notable piece, "Under the Scorching Sun at Pulau Tekong", was created by artist Fan Shao Hua, who drew inspiration from his firsthand experiences. The painting, which focuses on the theme of National Service, reflects the artist's personal emotions and is likely to evoke memories of military service among many Singaporeans.
In addition, this year's winning entries from the "Ngee Ann National Student Calligraphy Competition" are also displayed alongside the calligraphy and paintings. The competition attracted 216 students from 52 primary and secondary schools, as well as junior colleges, with a notable increase in participation compared to previous years.
This year, the Ngee Ann Cultural Centre also introduced a "Most Participating Students Award" in the primary, secondary, and college categories. The awards went to Pei Chun Public School, Chung Cheng High School (Main), and Hwa Chong Institution (College Section), respectively.
In an interview, Ngee Ann Corporation's Deputy Honorary Treasurer and Chair of the Cultural Subcommittee, Seah Choo Ming, said that the "Ngee Ann National Day Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition" is one of the most important annual art events for the Ngee Ann Cultural Centre. "The exhibition not only provides a platform for local artists to showcase their best works, but also encourages public participation in cultural exchange."
Ngee Ann Corporation's 45th President, Teo Sio Hiong, was invited as the guest of honor to officiate the ribbon-cutting ceremony. He expressed that Ngee Ann Corporation is deeply committed to the preservation of Chinese culture. In addition to supporting the calligraphy and painting exhibition, the company will continue to back more cultural activities in the future, expanding to a wider range of cultural mediums to further enhance the vibrancy of the local cultural scene.
The "Ngee Ann National Day Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition" is open to the public for free until August 8. It is being held at Ngee Ann Exhibition Halls 1 and 2, and the Lim Hak Tai Gallery at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. The exhibition hours are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
