Artist Fan Shaohua’s (age 53) Upcoming Solo Exhibition for the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Foundation
Following his large-scale retrospective exhibition “Artistic Journey: 40 Years of Mid-Career Art” at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in 2015, Fan Shaohua will hold another solo exhibition on the 26th of this month, this time as a fundraising effort for the NAFA Foundation. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of his artworks will be donated to the foundation.
In this exhibition, Fan will showcase 30 oil and ink paintings, including expressive depictions of lotus flowers, landscapes, and figures, blending elements of the human body with nature to create imagined scenes where humans and the natural world seamlessly coexist. Fan Shaohua is well known for his figure painting, with his Best Award winning work at the 2000 UOB Painting Competition also being a portrait. His ink paintings "Questioning the Lotus" and "Graceful Stand", along with his oil painting "Lotus Picking" feature ethereal flower fairies, symbolizing the purity and elegance of lotus flowers that "emerge unstained from the mud."
Fan uses oil painting techniques to convey the essence of ink landscapes in his works like "Meandering Water", "Windy View", "Yellow Falls", and "Listening to Snow." These pieces feature mystical figures that embody the changing seasons in nature. The mountains and rivers portrayed on the xuan paper evoke a sense of reality and fantasy, as if the viewer is seeing mountains and water that are both real and imaginary.
Graduating from the Oil Painting Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1985, Fan Shaohua’s expressive lotus flowers and landscapes have been exhibited in major galleries, including Guangdong Art Museum, Shanghai Art Museum, National Art Museum of China (Beijing), Hong Kong City Hall, Duoyunxuan (Shanghai), as well as in Korea and Japan.
